Frequently asked questions

What is a word unscrambler?

A word unscrambler takes a set of letters and finds every valid word that can be formed from them — including words that use only some of the letters. It works by checking every permutation and subset of your letters against a dictionary. Unscramblebot checks up to 270,000 words across four official game dictionaries.

Is using a word unscrambler cheating?

It depends on the context. In casual games with friends, most people agree it's fine as a learning tool — seeing what words were possible helps you improve. In rated tournament play, it's not allowed during the game. Most players use unscramblers between games to study racks they played poorly, which is encouraged by top competitors.

What is the difference between TWL and SOWPODS?

TWL (Tournament Word List) is the official dictionary for Scrabble tournaments in North America. SOWPODS combines the TWL with additional British and international words and is used in international tournaments outside North America. SOWPODS accepts roughly 70,000 more words than TWL. If you're playing casual Scrabble in the US, use TWL. If you're playing against international opponents or on some online platforms, check which dictionary the game uses.

How do I use a blank tile in the unscrambler?

Enter a ? for each blank tile in your rack. For example, if you have the letters A, E, R, S, T and one blank, enter AERST?. The unscrambler treats the ? as any letter, finding every word your rack can form. Note that blank tiles score 0 points in both Scrabble and Words With Friends.

What are the highest-scoring Scrabble words?

The theoretical highest Scrabble score for a single word is MUZJIKS (128 points) or QUIZZIFY (over 400 with premium squares). In practice, the highest-scoring common plays involve the Q, Z, X, or J tiles on triple-letter or triple-word squares. See the highest-scoring Scrabble words list for the top 100 by raw tile value.

Does the unscrambler work for Words With Friends?

Yes — select "Words With Friends" in the dictionary dropdown. The WWF dictionary differs from Scrabble's TWL in both word validity and tile point values. For example, B is worth 4 points in WWF vs 3 in Scrabble, and some words valid in WWF are not valid in Scrabble and vice versa. Always match your dictionary to the game you're playing.
