Q Without U Words: Every Valid Scrabble Play

The Q tile is worth 10 points but impossible to play without knowing these words. Here's every valid Q-without-U word in TWL and SOWPODS Scrabble dictionaries.

Drawing the Q without a U can feel like a death sentence — until you know this list. These words let you play that 10-point tile without needing the most common pairing in the English language.

Why Q Without U Is So Important

The Q tile scores 10 points in Scrabble. There are two Q tiles in the bag and only four U tiles. In any given game, you have roughly a 40% chance of holding Q without a U at some point. Players who know this list convert that liability into a high-scoring play. Players who don't — pass or exchange, losing a turn and initiative.

The Most Important Q-Without-U Word: QI

QI (11 points) is the single most valuable two-letter word in Scrabble. It plays almost anywhere — on its own or as a hook — and dumps the Q without needing anything else. If you remember only one word from this list, make it QI.

Short Q-Without-U Words (2–4 letters)

These are your bread and butter — short enough to fit on a crowded board:

  • QI (2) — 11 pts — vital life force in Chinese philosophy
  • QAT (3) — 12 pts — variant of khat (a plant)
  • QIS (3) — 12 pts — plural of qi
  • QANAT (5) — 14 pts — an irrigation tunnel
  • QOPH (4) — 16 pts — Hebrew letter (also KOPH)
  • QOPH — also spelled KOPF in some variants
  • TRANQ (5) — 14 pts — to tranquilize; a tranquilizer
  • WAQF (4) — 19 pts — Islamic charitable trust

Medium Q-Without-U Words (5–7 letters)

These take more tiles but score higher and open up bingo opportunities:

  • QIGONG (6) — 18 pts — Chinese breathing exercise system
  • QINTAR (6) — 15 pts — monetary unit of Albania
  • QOPH — hooks to QOPHS
  • SHEQEL (6) — 15 pts — Israeli currency unit (also SHEKEL)
  • SHEQELS (7) — 16 pts — plural
  • QABALAH (7) — 19 pts — variant spelling of kabbalah
  • QAWWALI (7) — 23 pts — Sufi devotional music

SOWPODS-Only Q-Without-U Words

Playing with the international dictionary? These are valid in SOWPODS but not TWL:

  • QADI — Islamic judge
  • QAIDS — plural of qaid (chief)
  • QAID — a Muslim tribal chief
  • QOPH — valid in both
  • FIQH — Islamic jurisprudence
  • QINTAR — valid in both
  • TALAQ — Islamic divorce declaration
  • TRANQ — valid in both

Q Hooks You Should Know

Some words accept Q as a hook (letter added to the front or end):

  • IRAQ → not valid in Scrabble (proper noun), but useful to remember the pattern
  • CINQ — valid in SOWPODS, 16 pts
  • COIFQ — not valid; be careful with apparent Q hooks

The reliable Q-end hook in TWL is TRANQ (from TRANQUILIZE). Most -Q endings are SOWPODS-only.

Strategy: What to Do When You Draw Q

  1. First: Scan the board for an I. QI plays in almost any two-square gap.
  2. Second: Check for a U anywhere reachable. QU opens QUIZ, QUEEN, QUAFF, QUARTZ — all massive scores.
  3. Third: Look for an A to set up QAT or QANAT.
  4. Last resort: Exchange the Q only if none of the above apply and you're early enough in the game that the bag is still full.
