Q Without U Words: Every Valid Scrabble Play
The Q tile is worth 10 points but impossible to play without knowing these words. Here's every valid Q-without-U word in TWL and SOWPODS Scrabble dictionaries.
Drawing the Q without a U can feel like a death sentence — until you know this list. These words let you play that 10-point tile without needing the most common pairing in the English language.
Why Q Without U Is So Important
The Q tile scores 10 points in Scrabble. There are two Q tiles in the bag and only four U tiles. In any given game, you have roughly a 40% chance of holding Q without a U at some point. Players who know this list convert that liability into a high-scoring play. Players who don't — pass or exchange, losing a turn and initiative.
The Most Important Q-Without-U Word: QI
QI (11 points) is the single most valuable two-letter word in Scrabble. It plays almost anywhere — on its own or as a hook — and dumps the Q without needing anything else. If you remember only one word from this list, make it QI.

Q Hooks You Should Know
Some words accept Q as a hook (letter added to the front or end):
- IRAQ → not valid in Scrabble (proper noun), but useful to remember the pattern
- CINQ — valid in SOWPODS, 16 pts
- COIFQ — not valid; be careful with apparent Q hooks
The reliable Q-end hook in TWL is TRANQ (from TRANQUILIZE). Most -Q endings are SOWPODS-only.
Strategy: What to Do When You Draw Q
- First: Scan the board for an I. QI plays in almost any two-square gap.
- Second: Check for a U anywhere reachable. QU opens QUIZ, QUEEN, QUAFF, QUARTZ — all massive scores.
- Third: Look for an A to set up QAT or QANAT.
- Last resort: Exchange the Q only if none of the above apply and you're early enough in the game that the bag is still full.
