Scrabble Letter Values: Every Tile's Point Value and Count

The complete Scrabble tile reference — every letter's point value, how many tiles are in the bag, and which tiles to prioritize based on scoring potential.

Every Scrabble tile has a point value and a fixed count. Knowing both — not just the value — is what separates good players from great ones. Here's the complete reference.

How Scrabble Tile Counts Affect Strategy

The most common tiles (and how to use them)

E (12 tiles) is the most abundant tile in the game. It's also the most common hook — dozens of words gain or lose an E at the start or end. Because E is so common, it's the tile most likely to cause rack imbalance. If you're holding three or more E's, play one off even for a modest score.

A (9 tiles) and I (9 tiles) are nearly as common. Same principle: two vowels in a rack is healthy; three or more starts limiting your options.

S (4 tiles) is the most tactically powerful 1-point tile. Four S tiles in the bag means you'll likely see two per game. Never waste an S for a small score — hold it until you can pluralize an existing high-value word while extending your own play.

The scarce high-value tiles

J, K, Q, X, Z each appear only once. When you draw one, your priority changes: find the best available square immediately rather than waiting for a better position. A J on a Triple Letter Score is worth 24 points before the word multiplier. A Z on any premium square is a game-changer.

For Q specifically: since there's only one Q and four U tiles, the Q-without-U words (full list here) are critical insurance. QI alone — two letters, 11 points — is enough to get the Q off your rack in nearly any board state.

Blanks are worth more than any tile

The two blank tiles score 0 points but are worth holding for bingo attempts (using all 7 tiles for a 50-point bonus). A blank combined with SATINE or RETINA opens dozens of 7-letter plays. Don't waste a blank for a 15-point word when it might be part of a 70-point bingo next turn.

Words With Friends Letter Values

WWF uses different point values. Key differences from Scrabble:

  • B = 4 pts (vs 3 in Scrabble)
  • H = 3 pts (vs 4)
  • M = 4 pts (vs 3)
  • U = 2 pts (vs 1)
  • V = 5 pts (vs 4)
  • W = 4 pts (same)
  • Y = 3 pts (vs 4)

How to Calculate Your Scrabble Score

To score a word manually:

  1. Add up the face value of every letter tile placed.
  2. Apply any Double Letter Score (DLS) or Triple Letter Score (TLS) squares to individual tiles before applying word multipliers.
  3. Apply any Double Word Score (DWS) or Triple Word Score (TWS) to the entire word total.
  4. If multiple word multipliers apply (rare, but happens when extending through a DWS), multiply sequentially.
  5. Add 50 points if you played all 7 tiles (a bingo).

Example: QUARTZ played across a DWS where the Q lands on a DLS = (10×2 + 1 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 10) × 2 = 27 × 2 = 54 points, plus whatever tiles were already on the board that your word extends.

Total Face Value of All Scrabble Tiles

The total face value of all 100 tiles in a standard Scrabble set is 187 points (excluding blanks). This is why a competitive game where both players use premium squares well can end with combined scores of 600–900 points — each tile is being multiplied by 2× or 3× multiple times across the board.
